The British Government in Germany is based at the British Embassy in Berlin and our consulates in Dusseldorf and Munich. We are part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas.

The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the British government’s lead department for international trade and supports foreign investment into the United Kingdom and UK exporters entering international markets. Currently, we are looking for a Senior Business Development Manager to be based in Munich or in Berlin to promote Technology Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and Capital Investment into the United Kingdom.

The UK has one of the most vibrant Tech ecosystem in the world. This job offers the opportunity to work at the heart of the Department for International Trade’s (DIT) strategy to promote inward investment to the UK by focusing on technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Fintech, Data Analytics, 5G, Quantum, and Cyber Security. You will identify and actively liaise with Germany’s largest technology corporates and high-growth start-ups that have the potential to invest and create new jobs in the UK. The job offers autonomy and freedom to set your own direction within the Tech team, not least in cultivating key contacts in business and government. Following the UK’s exit from the EU, you will be involved in working closely with businesses to understand the present and likely future impact on them.

You will develop and manage a strong pipeline of potential investment projects and map new opportunities in the fast-moving tech sector. This will include facilitating meetings for senior diplomats and ministers and organising industry events. You will advise colleagues in London on commercial trends and shifts in policy.

The role will also support the implementation of DIT’s Capital Investment strategy in Germany. This will include working with German Institutional Investors and Venture Capitalists on UK investments into infrastructure, real estate, and green energy.

The role will work as part of a friendly and supportive team at DIT Germany and a wider network across Europe, with regular opportunities to travel. DIT Germany also provides a modern and flexible working environment with the opportunity to work from Home Office if appropriate. As with all DIT positions, there will be a focus on working collaboratively with colleagues across the Germany Network team to maximise opportunities for the UK. The work will be varied and demanding and the successful candidate will need to be a flexible, committed self-starter, able to juggle priorities and to work on demanding timelines.

  • Fluency in English and German (written and spoken, minimum of C2 level for CEFR framework*);
  • Educated to University degree;
  • Experience in the tech sector or in Foreign Direct Investment;
  • Experience in Business Development or Relationship Management;
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills to be credible with the most senior business leaders;
  • Strong written, analytical and research skills;
  • Very good IT skills, especially MS Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Experience of Capital Investment or in any of the UK’s priority investment areas (Infrastructure, Green Energy, and Real Estate) would be would be a bonus but not essential;
  • Experience working in the start-up ecosystem would be desirable.

This is a full-time position of five working days 37.5 hours per week, for a contract period of two years. Expected start date 1 February 2021 though there is some flexibility.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check and security clearance.
