View Vacancy - SIN - Vice Consul B3(L)
The jobholder will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the consular operation in Singapore.
Consular work is both extremely rewarding, helping people when they most need it, but it is also challenging and requires personal resilience. The successful applicant will provide British nationals in difficulty with the full range of assistance and fee-paying services in line with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) Consular Strategy, consular guidance and Customer Charter, business targets and local procedures.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Leadership and day to day running of consular operation in Singapore, with overall responsibility for ensuring staff deliver the consular strategy, meet public targets, and deliver consistent and high level customer service. Line manage 2 staff, providing guidance, support, and direction to them.
- Lead on high-profile/ complex assistance cases, including visiting prisoners, dealing with deaths, hospitalisations, victims of crime, distressed British nationals.
- Develop and deliver plans to reduce preventable consular incidents in Singapore, collaborating with the Asia Pacific Prevention Manager. Manage outreach and communications with key external stakeholders, building partnerships with local authorities, British groups, the travel industry, and other local organisations. Monitor and update travel advice, including recommendations for social media messaging.
- Liaise with regional consular management and other consular staff on operational and policy issues, inculding involvement in regional working groups. Provide statistical returns and reporting throughout the year. Administer and profile budgets delegated to post by the Consular Regional Director. Consular Section cash supervisor.
- As part of the whole mission approach, assist in preparing for and responding appropriately to mass casualty incidents or crises. Be a member of the Post crisis management team.

- Able to follow procedures and guidelines in making judgements and solving problems.
- Willingness to work additional hours as necessary, sometimes at unsociable hours during a crisis.
- Experience in managing staff.
- Strong time management skills.
- Good attention to detail.
- IT proficiency in using MS Office and Outlook, and ability to learn FCO systems.
- Strong English language skills, both written and spoken.
- Previous consular or comparable experience.
- Experience of living in or an understanding of the UK.
- Experience in social media/ IT skills.
- Normal working hours are 37.5 per week: 8.30 to 5.00 pm from Monday to Friday. There will be a requirement for occasional out of hours work during crisis situations. There is scope for flexible working arrangements.
- Monthly gross salary of SGD 4,273 + CPF/ CPF-in-lieu, with pro-rated 13th and 14th month pay
- 23 days paid annual leave (will be pro-rated on the first year)
