DIT is a UK Government department that encourages and supports overseas-based companies to invest in the UK and helps UK companies export abroad.


The position available is for a Trade and Investment Associate, based at the British Consulate-General - Calgary. This role will cover both our investment attraction and trade promotion efforts. That is, assisting Canadian companies and capital investors based in the Prairie provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba) who are looking to invest in the UK and also assisting UK companies seeking to export goods and services to Canada. Balance of work will be around 75% investment and 25% export promotion.


The Department for International Trade (DIT) Canada is offering an opportunity to join its small but dynamic team, fostering business relations between Canada and its top economic partner in Europe, the United Kingdom (UK).

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Conduct market research of industry and businesses across the Prairie provinces to identify investment targets.
• Make contact with potential and existing inward investors.
• Monitor business trends and developments across a range of target sectors to identify investment and export opportunities.
• Carry out market research for UK exporters.
• Coordinate business development visits and programmes for senior officers.
• Assist with meeting preparation and subsequent meeting records.
• Assist with and sometimes lead on event coordination as required including webinars, visits programmes, trade missions, or bespoke events such as information seminars.
• Attend key conferences and networking events and follow up contacts made.
• Maintain and manage internal databases and perform data analysis.
• Perform office administration tasks and other ad hoc duties as required.
• Occasional travel and out of office hours work may be required.

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (business degree is preferred).
• A minimum of 18 months of relevant work experience related to a business environment.
• Proven research skills.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills intended for a business audience.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to flex these to engage with a wide range of internal DIT colleagues across the network, and external business contacts at different organisational levels.
• Attention to detail and good follow-up discipline
• A self-starter and proactive inactively finding new business opportunities.
• Proven skills in time management and prioritization, organization, and the ability to effectively manage and execute multiple and competing tasks under tight deadlines
• Ability to work well independently, with limited day-to-day supervision, as well as a part of a larger team
• Positive team player
• Competence in IT (MS Office applications).

  • Knowledge of the business environment in the Prairie provinces and a good understanding of Canada-UK commercial relations.

The position requires pre-existing legal status to live and work in Canada and will be subject to satisfactory reference checks and successful receipt of local and overseas security clearances.

The successful candidate will be subject to satisfactory references and local and overseas security clearances and a six month probation period.
