The British Embassy in Copenhagen is part of a worldwide network, representing British political & economic and consular interests overseas.

A full-time position as Executive Assistant to the Defence Attaché has become available in the Defence section.

The successful candidate will support the Defence Attaché by influencing Danish defence, planning and managing activities and events that enhance the Defence section’s network, keep the Defence Attaché informed of what may become Danish defence issues relevant to the UK and encourage Denmark to support UK views on Defence. Through Defence engagement, the job holder is expected to build robust relationships in order to influence Danish Defence and to strengthen the UK’s position as the world’s leading soft power.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Influence Defence contacts: maintain and enhance the Defence section’s network at all levels, through personal communication; further enhanced through continuous update of relevant databases; the ability to contact the right person in any Defence or military situation that may arise;

  • Defence engagement: support the Defence Attaché to identify areas where strategic engagement is required, generating the opportunities for the right players to meet;

  • Events and visits: Lead on the planning of Defence events, ceremonies and visits, being the first point of contact when such events are being developed (including military funerals); plan and coordinate programmes and requirements for official Defence visitors;

  • Administration: General administration of the Defence Section including the shared calendar, inbox, information management and distribution of publications;

  • Knowledge and lead on all CWGC sites, Liberation commemorations and relevant memorials;

  • In the absence of the Assistant Defence Attaché, obtain Diplomatic Clearance for visiting UK military units (air, land, sea);

  • Back up to the Assistant Defence Attaché in managing the Defence budgets.



  • Proficiency in English and Danish language skills (both spoken and written);

  • At least 2 years’ of working experience in providing programme support in an administrative role in an international working environment;

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to foster relationships and build and maintain an effective network of contacts;

  • Ability to communicate effectively to enhance engagement and influence;

  • Proven event management skills in providing logistical and administrative support;

  • Basic budget management skills;

  • Great IT skills with Microsoft Office package (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.);

  • Ability to work well within a small team and within the wider Embassy team;

  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.

     



  • Knowledge of the UK Armed Forces and Danish Defence;

  • Previous experience within a diplomatic mission would be an advantage.

This is a full-time permanent contract of 35 hours per week (Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:00).

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check and security clearance.

The successful candidate must have pre-existing work authorization for Denmark in order to apply.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Copenhagen is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Danish employment law.
