The British Embassy in Tallinn is part of the United Kingdom’s world-wide diplomatic network, and represents British political, economic and consular interests in Estonia and is now looking to recruit a UN Coordination Officer.

The purpose of the job will be to support Estonia’s non-permanent United Nations Security Council (UNSC) membership, acting as a contact and assistance point within the Embassy for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on UN issues. You will be responsible for preparing and sharing UK reporting with the ministry, and monitoring UNSC voting patterns and statements. The UN Coordination officer will also monitor and lobby on UK priority issues as required. As part of a small political team within the embassy the job holder will be required to demonstrate flexibility as to assist in other areas as required - e.g. on climate change as COP 26 in Glasgow approaches.

Main roles and responsibilities:

  • Leading on UNSC cooperation with the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) including through drawing up an engagement plan
  • Responding to MFA requests
  • Preparing and providing UK reports relevant to UNSC discussions
  • Lobbying and briefing the Estonian government on Security Council issues
  • Monitoring statements and voting patterns at the UN
  • Organising occasional inward and outward visits to and from the UK
  • Providing to advice to the Ambassador, Head of Political and others as necessary

Estonia is a non-permanent member of the UNSC for 2020 and 2021. Election to the UNSC has been a top foreign policy objective for Estonia for some time and their campaign was led personally by President Kaljulaid. As a P5 permanent UNSC member and close strategic ally of Estonia, the UK is committed to supporting and cooperating with Estonia in the UN. The UK and Estonia are closely aligned on many international issues and Estonia’s UNSC tenure is an opportunity to work together on the Security Council in the many areas where our views and objectives align, and to further strengthen our bilateral relationship with a key European and NATO partner.

  • A degree in international politics or a related subject, and/or broad experience and knowledge of international affairs;
  • Proven relevant work experience in the private and/or public sector;
  • An excellent level of written and spoken English;
  • A good level of spoken and written Estonian is desirable, but not an absolute requirement;
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and networking skills;
  • The ability to respond flexibly and creatively to changing priorities and to work closely and collaboratively within a team environment.

This is a full-time fixed-term contract of 40 hours per week.

The annual leave entitlement is 20 working days per year pro rata and the Embassy enjoys an average of 14 public holidays per year.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance.
