Driver / Messenger

Main purpose of job:

Embassy driver to safely transport FCO staff to and from official appointments.

Roles and responsibilities:

As Official Driver:

  • To drive safely at all times and abiding by local traffic laws & regulations.
  • To ensure that passengers are properly seated and wearing seatbelt/s before departure.
  • To coordinate daily with the Transport Manager/Transport Coordinator for the driving schedule and in any other concern relative to embassy transports.  
  • To check destinations and ensure routes to and from the locations are safe & accessible (without on-going road works) & will not endanger driver and vehicle occupants.
  • To be punctual, honest, courteous and well-dressed at all times.
  • To undertake messengerial duties for pick up/drop off important official documents.
  • Undertake VIP visit support duties.
  • Properly fill up forms for overtime and other claims.
  • Perform other tasks as directed by the Transport Manager/Transport Coordinator.

Vehicle Maintenance:

  • To ensure that embassy vehicles remain clean before & after every official trip.
  • To undertake daily inspections of the embassy vehicles focusing on the following:
  1. Brakes
  2. Lights
  3. Oil
  4. Water
  5. Air (Tire Pressure)
  6. Gas (or Fuel)
  • Report any noted defects and accidents immediately to the Transport Manager/Transport Coordinator.
  • Fuel up vehicles as per guidance (when tank is already half full) & only at designated fuel stations.
  • Ensure every official trip is logged on the record book every journey signed off by or any of passengers.
  • Valid driving licence (at least for light manual & automatic vehicles)
  • No criminal record (need to submit a valid NBI clearance)
  • Sound knowledge of Metro Manila
  • Basic car maintenance knowledge

Familiarity of Metro Manila:

  • Have a thorough knowledge of Metro Manila major thoroughfares and roads including those leading to the major airport terminals (to include the VIP parking & lounges).
  • Developed knowledge about the location of national & local government offices & agencies.
  • Developed knowledge on the locations of national & local Philippine National Police stations & precincts, and hospitals.
Have basic computer knowledge – at least in MS Word & Excel, and use of the internet for e-learning courses & other FCO net services

The British Embassy offers a competitive compensation package, guaranteed 13th and 14th month pay, 20 days paid annual leave (calculated on Pro-rata basis if joined after 1 January), extensive medical insurance, life insurance and access to a guaranteed 5 days of learning opportunities a year. For residence staff, the normal working week is 48 hours over a 6 day period with one rest-day.

No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. You must have work authorisation for the Philippines in order to apply.

Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment checks. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy Manila is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Philippine employment law.

Candidates are expected to have a valid NBI Clearance.

Learning and development opportunities: 

  • Undergo Defensive and Evasive driving course/s in UK or any location were such training is provided for regular embassy vehicles and emergency flag car duties.
  • Undergo training in First Aid & Basic Life Support.
  • Undergo training on vehicle trouble shooting.
