The British Embassy in Lisbon is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. The Department for International Trade (DIT) is seeking to temporarily appoint a Trade & Investment Adviser that will be responsible for the day-to-day management of DIT’s activities in Security, Infrastructures, and Transports sectors for the period of one year.

The purpose of this temporary role is to assist UK companies to make full use of the business opportunities in country, and to deliver significant business outcomes. It involves identifying relevant opportunities and business partners, answering enquiries about the local market, and designing and managing events, which promote UK companies, securing sponsorship where necessary. As part of their work, the successful candidate is expected to achieve results within budget, meeting DIT’s corporate standards for quality of service and business impact.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Proactively identify opportunities for UK companies in Security, Infrastructures, and Transports based sectors in country;

  • Match the UK offering to local market opportunity to help optimise UK business development in country;

  • Support Team Lead with market research, general administration tasks, update and maintain a contacts database arranging appointments with UK and Portuguese companies and compiling activity statistics;

  • Services Campaign in country to deliver high value Export Wins for UK companies;

  • Promote opportunities in Security, Infrastructures, and Transports sectors services to British companies and relevant business organisations;

  • Co-operate closely with other Embassy teams, relevant external stakeholders and DIT colleagues across the Europe South region;

  • Support team working with the Regional Business Enquire Hub.

Main responsibilities will include:

  • Assist UK companies to develop their export activities in the country market by effectively and proactively developing appropriate networks and relationships with DIT HQ, country, UK and EU business/trade associations and the private sector;

  • Deliver against agreed targets, including Export Wins, OMIS (Overseas Market Introduction Service) revenue, Export Opportunities, and case studies / success stories published;

  • Provide cover and assistance to the Team Leader and colleagues when required;

  • Market research to compile contacts and relevant sector information;

  • Organise events liaising with internal and external stakeholders, taking care of logistics that allow to deliver relevant formats, namely the agendas of UK and Portuguese companies;

  • Answer enquiries by British and Portuguese companies, update and maintain a contacts database, as well as the team activity stats.

  • University Degree;

  • Fluency in English and Portuguese (both written and spoken, minimum of C2 level for CEFR framework*);

  • Knowledge of Trade & Investment concepts;

  • Working experience in Account management;

  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Experience with Project management tools;

This is a 12 months fixed-term full-time contract, 35 net per week subject to a 30 days probation period.

The British Embassy in Lisbon aims to offer an attractive working environment and a monthly gross salary for this role of € 1,527.12, provided that the individual in question is subject to individual income tax (IRS) in Portugal on the employment income in question or, alternatively, is subject to income tax on such income in the UK; plus a monthly meal allowance of 134.00 Euros.

All staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Portugal are subject to local Portuguese employment law as well as internal regulations in force at any given time.

The successful candidate will be subject to a professional background and security clearance and must have pre-existing work authorisation for Portugal in order to apply.

All applicants should have the right to live and work in Portugal. The British Embassy does not sponsor work permits.

The Embassy will not consider applications from existing staff who have not successfully completed their probation period or, in the case of staff on temporary contract who have not yet completed two thirds of their contract.

Visa/Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Portugal and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Additional requirements may become necessary after 31st December 2020.
