The British Embassy in Madrid is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is looking to recruit an Economic and Public Policy Intern for a period of 6 months.

The Economic Intern will form part of the Embassy’s Economic and Public Policy Team, which sits within the Embassy’s Political & Economic Section.

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting in-depth and insightful quantitative and qualitative analysis. Research will feed into briefing for the Ambassador/Deputy Head of Mission’s meetings and visits, provide the team with a stronger analytical base for its engagement with government and business, and help to inform UK policy.

Analyse national and regional economic data and identify key trends in the Spanish economy. Provide written reports for colleagues in the Embassy and officials in London, ensuring that they are aware of any important developments.

Analyse the relationship between the UK and Spain, including analysis of key sectors and wider linkages in terms of trade, investment, tourism and migration. Provide regular updates to colleagues in the Embassy and officials in London, ensuring that they have the latest figures and understand the economic context.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Analyse health and other statistics related to Covid-19, contributing to Embassy reporting on the evolving health situation and response.
  • Provide ad hoc factual briefing for the Ambassador and Embassy colleagues to assist with official visits across Spain.
  • Contribute to the organisation and running of Embassy events.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills enabling effective communication in both English and Spanish (minimum C1 level);
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Dynamic and hardworking, with ability to work on own initiative.


  • Educational background in economics, statistics or related field;
  • Proficiency with Excel;  
  • Keen interest in current affairs.

This is a part-time internship contract. Normal working hours are 25 per week.

The successful candidate is subject to a confirmation of a background check, security clearance and the successful completion of a probationary period.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy based on gross annual salary.

The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Spain and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
