The Embassy is seeking to recruit a Press and Communications Assistant to provide support to the Press and Communications Team. We need someone able to be not only the central source of knowledge when it comes to the latest/most relevant global and national news, but also somebody extremely organised and able to keep our busy office running smoothly.


Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

 

Working closely with our Communication Officers, the Digital Media Manager and the Head of the Team, the selected candidate will be mainly responsible for:

 

  • Monitoring UK and local media (including social media) to identify important stories for the different sections of the Embassy, as soon as they become relevant. Producing a daily local news report and international news updates to inform the British Embassy and London staff about the most important news concerning our bilateral relationship.
  • Being responsible for the budget administration of the press and communications and contracts database. Hiring providers for events, booking flights and making hotel reservations for the team and other administrative duties.
  • Supporting the Embassy in the organisation of events and campaign launches, and providing support with different activities: welcoming and managing the press, taking photographs and video to feed our digital channels, providing logistical support, etc. Having an active role in the promotion of the GREAT Campaign.
  • Liaising with Mexican media: Producing and distributing press releases in order to inform local media about our activities and key messages. Inviting media to our events: dispatching invitations to the press and other partners; compiling lists of confirmed guests; following up, confirming and securing relevant attendance, etc.
  • Creating and distributing daily, monthly and annual media reports to evaluate our impact.
  • Being responsible for the British Embassy’s magazines and newspapers’ subscriptions by keeping them updated.
  • Updating the Embassy’s calendar of activities every week.
  • Updating our press contacts database on a regular basis.
  • He/she will also have the opportunity to contribute with original content for our permanent communications channels such as digital media, the Ambassador’s weekly column, among others.
  • Eventually becoming the comms lead for a specific area of the Embassy, and designing and implementing communications and PR plans for those teams.

Essential on arrival:


  • A Bachelor degree (or equivalent) in Communication Sciences, Journalism, Mass-media (or other careers related) is desired.
  • Outstanding writing skills in both English and Spanish.
  • Competent analysis and synthesis skills.
  • Deep understanding of the Mexican media.
  • Relevant knowledge and genuine interest in local news and international affairs.
  • Excellent prioritisation and organisational skills are a MUST.
  • A proactive attitude towards information is essential.
  • Strong customer focus, teamwork and interpersonal skills are crucial.
  • Initiative and judgement.
  • Computer skills (including spreadsheets, Word, Power Point, etc) are required.
  • Effective planning and tidiness are expected.

  • Photography skills.
  • Design software knowledge (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.)

Our role includes monitoring the news, creating messages, organising events, arranging interviews, developing new media partnerships and launch impactful campaigns to promote UK products, technologies, ideas, policies, best practices, innovations and business opportunities. In short, we want people to understand and know more about everything that the UK has to offer. This will strengthen the bilateral relations we have with Mexico.  We also aim to raise the profile of the UK in Latin America and ultimately contribute to help the UK, Mexico and other countries to bring more prosperity and security to their citizens.
