The United Kingdom Mission to the United Nations in Geneva is looking for a highly motivated Intern to support the newly appointed UK Ambassador for Human Rights and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations. The selected intern will assist on a range of administrative and policy tasks, including effective planning and support for the Ambassador’s official meetings, visits and events.

This internship offers a unique opportunity to participate in the UK Mission’s human rights work as an integral part of the UK delegation. The internship will offer a chance to learn about the Foreign and Commonwealth Office while working on human rights issues in an international context and engaging with a range of stakeholders from across the globe, including UN agencies, NGOs and Civil Society.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supporting diary management and event coordination;
  • Drafting official correspondence on human rights related issues on behalf of the Ambassador for Human Rights and DPR;  
  • Organising logistical arrangements for the Ambassador’s official travel, visits, meetings and events;
  • Information management including: record keeping, file management, maintaining contact databases and updating planning documents;  
  • Assisting in the creation of visit programmes and preparing briefing ahead of meetings;
  • Attending human rights meetings and providing timely and accurate reporting;  
  • Supporting the preparation of events hosted by the Ambassador; 
  • Carrying out background research on a range of human rights related issues when required;
  • Supporting the Human Rights team on a range of tasks when required, such as covering meetings and side-events at the 42nd session of the Human Rights Council in September 2019.





  • University Degree;
  • Strong organisational skills with excellent attention to detail;
  • Accurate and clear written communication skills; 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to work with all seniorities;  
  • Experience of working in a team;
  • Strong interest in working in the human rights field and the UN;
  • Very good computer skills (Microsoft Office Word, Outlook, Excel).
  • University Degree in Human Rights, International Relations;
  • Work experience in the human rights or international relations field;
  • Intermediate language skills in French (both oral and written);
  • Experience using social media for professional purposes.

All applicants should have permission to live and work in Switzerland. Applicants must hold a full passport valid for at least 12 months for any EU / Schengen country.

The UK Mission will offer the intern a monthly training allowance of 1,250 CHF. Please note that the intern will need to arrange and pay for his or her own travel, accommodation, mandatory health insurance, as well as any other costs. This internship will be for a period of 6 months with possibiliy of renewal (of up to 5 months).

The final appointment will be dependent upon successful security clearance. Please note that the selected candidate will be expected to complete the necessary requirements in order to seek security clearance.
