Driver / Messenger

The British Embassy in Budapest is part of the United Kingdom’s world-wide diplomatic network, and represents British political, economic and consular interests in Hungary and is now looking to recruit a Driver. The British Embassy’s driver is part of a small transportation team of 2 and part of the Corporate Services section. He/she reports to the Transport and Security Manager. The driver’s main responsibilities are to drive the Embassy’s official vehicles, including driving for the British Ambassador, provide excellent customer service and also carry out other general assistance based on the instructions of the Corporate Services team.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Official transportation of personnel, goods and official letters/parcels
  • Daily check up of vehicles and arrangements of repairs, maintenance, cleaning and refuelling of official vehicles
  • Administrative activities: record keeping of journeys and fuel consumption, invoice handling, etc.
  • General assistance: photocopying, flag flying, office goods purchasing for wider Embassy
  • Providing assistance for UK based colleagues on vehicle issues
  • Carrying out official admin issues at MFA Protocol Office, local authorities
  • Providing assistance for Ambassador/Residence/Embassy/Cross-Embassy activities with escorting visitors/colleagues, photographing on outside visits and carrying out other ad hoc tasks as requested

  • Fluency at a A level in English and fluency at a C level in Hungarian (both oral and written)
  • At least 3 years of work experience as a professional driver,
  • Good working driving knowledge of Budapest,
  • Ability to read a map, use GPS and live traffic navigation applications.
  • Have a flexible and adaptable personality,
  • Be honest and trustworthy,
  • Be well presented,
  • Can manage a varied and changeable work pattern.
  • Previous driving work experience as a professional driver at a Diplomatic Mission/ International Organization
  • Fluency at a C level of English both written and oral
  • Previous experience on fleet management, office administration, personal assistance.
  • Working experience in a shift system

This is a full-time position of 5 days (35 hours net per week) for a fixed-term contract of 2 years with the possibility of extension by mutual agreement.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance. You must have pre-existing work authorisation for Hungary in order to apply.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions service according to Hungarian employment law.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Hungary and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
