The British Embassy in Rome are part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for an Outreach and Visits Officer working within the Press and Public Affairs (PPA) section, to promote and co-ordinate Embassy Italy wide public diplomacy and communication campaigns designed to support the delivery of the Country Business Plan. To lead on the logistical delivery of high-level visits.

Main responsibilities will include:

Visits: coordination of logistics for VIP visitors to Italy, including security, airport, transport and accommodation requirements by liaising with relevant VIP/ Cabinet/ Ministerial office in the UK as well as with Italy Network colleagues and stakeholders;

Outreach: design and implement strategic communications plans and ad hoc campaigns on specific priorities, in cooperation with Italy Network colleagues; support in the organisation and delivery of seminars, conferences and other events, aimed at increasing favourable attitude towards UK policy, ensuring media coverage and participation. Overview of evaluation of impact and feedback to senior management. Programme Funds bids with a media element co-ordination and budget overview as necessary;

Media and social media: contact handling with Italian and British journalists. Daily contribution to a written summary in English of news stories, editorials and interviews from a number of Italian dailies; delivery to the Embassy senior managers of a shorter oral summary in Italian or English of the news of the day. Support with the implementation of the PPA social media strategy;

Consular crisis: support PPA in response to possible crises;

Corporate: contribute to cross-cutting Embassy activities. Actively engage in corporate activities and initiatives in the Italy Network.

  • Fluency in English and Italian (both oral and written, minimum C1 level*);
  • Experience of working for a government department, preferably either British or Italian;
  • Experience of working in a communications team, covering press and media relations, events, visits and social media;
  • Knowledge of the British and Italian political scene and priorities;
  • Flexible approach, strong initiative and adaptability to evolving work priorities;
  • Availability to travel to events outside Rome and to work overtime where essential for key visits and events, sometimes at short notice;
  • Strong project management skills;
  • Experience of handling VIP visits;
  • Experience of handling social media channel in a corporate capacity, including creating native content.
  • Proficient in the use of video and photo editing software;
  • Experience in the design of communication strategies;
  • Previously held UK Government security clearance.

This is a full-time temporary position until 31 March 2022, graded B3 (L) according to the FCDO grading structure. The monthly gross salary is € 2.929. The salary is paid monthly 14 times per year including € 10.33 EDR paid 13 times per year, with double salary payments in June and December. If working less than a full calendar year, the additional salary payments will be pro-rata.

Working hours are 35 hrs per week. There is flexibility on how the hours are worked across the week although 4 or 5 days is preferable.

The appointment is subject to security clearance, professional background check and the successful completion of a 4 month probationary period.

All staff employed by the British Embassy are subject to Italian income tax (IRPEF). However the administration of these tax payments will vary depending on nationality.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Italian State Social Security Scheme. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Rome are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Italian employment law.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Italy and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
