Learning and development opportunities:

This internship is designed to be an immersive learning and development opportunity for the successful person.  You will be able to shadow most of the staff in our small mission, gaining a real understanding of the demands of diplomatic life and also running a British diplomatic mission.

BHC St John’s is part of a network of five British missions in the Eastern Caribbean, with its High Commissioner based in Barbados.  There will be opportunities to virtually meet and learn from our staff carrying out the spectrum of UK Government objectives across our region during this internship.

Working patterns:

The internship will be for no more than 25 hours per week: we are happy to agree with the successful candidate when these are, provided they are within our mission’s standard working hours (0745-1600hrs Monday to Thursday and 0800-1300hrs Friday). The internship will last between three and six months, subject to approval by the Resident British Commissioner.

Additional Information:

The UK expanded its diplomatic network with twelve new missions in 2019, which included opening our High Commission near St John’s.  This is an exciting opportunity to learn from our small team which is working to have a real impact on UK/Antigua and Barbuda relations.   We are a busy and energetic team and need an intern with a “can do” and flexible attitude towards their learning and development.  The successful intern will have a thirst for knowledge, specifically understanding the UK’s relationship with Antigua and Barbuda.

The FCDO and our overseas network is recognised as a good organisation to work or intern for and we have a strong learning and development and organisational culture.  We treat people with respect and equality and have a policy of zero tolerance for any form of discrimination, bullying, or harassment.

Applications will only be accepted by citizens or residents of Antigua and Barbuda.

The appointment is subject to successful passing of reference and security checks.

A small stipend to cover any travel and lunch expenses will be made available. No accommodation costs or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this internship.
