The British Embassy in Madrid is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now recruiting an HR and Security Officer.  

The position holder will

  • Monitor pre-employment security checks 
  • Deputy Security Manager in the Spain Network Crisis Committee 
  • Support the Security Manager
  • Serve as back-up to the Security Manager for property inspections
  • Take forward recommendations from the Overseas Security Advisor 
  • Support Security Manager on Incident Response 
  • Deliver security and Health & Safety briefing to new staff

Furthermore the HR & Security Officer will

  • Support to the Corporate Services Director particularly on the following: Learning & Development  and the review and update of HR/Corporate Services policies
  • Support on HR induction processes
  • Cover for reception when leave is taken
  • support the Health and Safety Officer in coordinating statutory occupational health requirements and inspections and work accident reporting
  • Support HR Manager - payroll and job contract preparation for new staff
  • Liaise with HR Hub on ongoing recruitment processes




  • Discreet and confident person with excellent communication skills and ability to manage stakeholders and their expectations
  • Microsoft Office proficiency
  • Experience in customer service (internal and/or external customers)
  • Familiarity with Spain and its customs
  • Genuine interest in people and in HR/security matters

Our Employment Conditions:

This is a full-time fixed-term contract of 6 months as maternity leave cover with possibility of extension. The working hours are 37.5 hours per week.

The successful candidate is subject to a confirmation of a background check, security clearance and the successful completion of a probationary period.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy based on gross annual salary.

Regarding taxation, the British Embassy in Madrid is part of the British Mission in Spain. The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax-exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.

Visa/Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Spain and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Additional requirements may become necessary after 31st December 2020.
