Main purpose of the job:

Background: You will be one of the senior staff in the Healthcare and Life Sciences teams of Department for International Trade (DIT) with an objective of identifying export opportunities for UK business.  

The teams focus on delivery of UK/India Healthcare and Life Sciences strategy supporting UK companies collaborating and working with Indian stakeholders for mutual commercial benefit. Whilst based in Delhi the role will contribute to addressing nationwide opportunities and the successful candidate will be required to undertake limited travel in India. Experience and knowledge in areas of Healthcare and Life Sciences would be beneficial.

The job holder will require to liaise with senior management of hospitals, bio-pharma and medical technology companies in Northern India (Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, UP, HP and Delhi) to identify opportunities for trade between UK and India in healthcare and Life Sciences. The job holder will need to develop a Key account management strategy and execute it to help build a rolling pipeline of sales in various aspects of healthcare and life sciences. The job holder will have to liaise with senior healthcare Govt officials and build relations so as to initiate trade relations between the UK and the Govt of India. The job holder will need to ensure delivery of export wins and investment targets into India, and also work on identifying market access issues which hinder trade especially in Life Sciences which has been identified as a key sector for trade policy between UK and Indian governments to work on to overcome such barriers.

On priority, the job holder is expected to lead on the Delhi leg of our Healthcare AI mission scheduled in December 2019.

You will bring with you, or demonstrate how you would quickly acquire, an in-depth knowledge of the sectors.  You will follow the strategy identified for your region to generate a pipeline of opportunities for UK business.  To do so, you will identify and build relationships within the sectors and build a pipeline of validated projects for UK business, particularly large or high-value deals which would require UK government support or involvement to win.  You will then work with DIT’s Headquarters’ teams in the UK and in other markets to bring UK companies to India and support them to win business, delivering towards the UK government’s twin export targets.

Your role will be high profile.  You will be the voice of the UK government and industry in the sectors, and wider; you will be expected to gain access to the most senior levels within Indian industry and government if necessary using the Deputy High Commissioners and other senior staff.  You will be a self-starter who can demonstrate a long-term objective; plan and manage a delivery model; identify, grow and make effective use of stakeholders.   You will work with colleagues within DIT in India and elsewhere, with other UK government colleagues, Indian government(s), business and other multipliers (trade associations, etc.).

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Create, validate, plan and deliver the strategy for the Healthcare and Life Sciences sectors for the North of India.  Identify, validate and deliver a pipeline of export wins, ODI wins, and market access wins - projects and opportunities; plan and deliver activities to connect UK business to these opportunities and provide bespoke support to UK companies to win business.  In doing so, meet DIT’s internal targets (for pipeline, export wins, return on investment and customer satisfaction/quality). 
  • With the Healthcare  and Life Sciences team, build and manage senior level relationships with key Indian and UK business, stakeholders and partners within the sector, across one-HMG team and in the UK to support objectives and deliver value for UK business.
  • Create and innovate models to engage with stakeholders, raise the profile of the sector through activities & events planned, particularly the Healthcare AI mission scheduled for December 2019.
  • Provide help, support and advice to colleagues and peers in the Healthcare and Lifesciences teams across India and in other sub-sectors on specific projects, events and activities.
  • Contributing to wider corporate UK government objectives, including input to Ministerial/VIP visits and deliverables in Post and across one-HMG in India.

Learning and development opportunities:

Training and development opportunities will be made available to the candidate. The candidate will need to travel within India and internationally, including the UK for sector related events and training courses.

Graduate/post graduate. Candidates without the required educational qualifications but with exceptional practical experience will be considered.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant commercial/business experience
  • An understanding of the healthcare and life sciences sector, and/or experience of working in trade promotion.
  • Strong analytical and problem skills to search out significant opportunities for UK business.
  • Tried and tested project management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, team working and people management skills.
  • Experience of dealing with senior level decision makers Indian national and state government.
  • You will need to show a solid track record of dealing with senior level decision makers in the business world.

Desirable:

  • Experience of working in the UK; knowledge of the business environment and of UK business related policies.
  • Experience of leading a team remotely.
  • Marketing and presentational skills.
  • Experience of working with Government at central or state level will also be an advantage
