The British Embassy in Paris is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. It is also part of the UK’s France Network, including offices in Lyon, Bordeaux and Marseilles and representation to international organisations in Paris (OECD and UNESCO) and Strasbourg (CoE).

The British Embassy is currently looking for a Receptionist/Telephonist.

To answer and redirect incoming calls on our main switchboard e.g. visa, passport and consular enquiries;

• To reply to general written enquiries from the public and to forward to other sections in the   France Network when necessary;

• To keep a quantified record of all public communications;

•  To collaborate with other sections to regularly review the standard templates used to respond to public enquiries (i.e. ensuring that information is in line policy changes);

• To carry out miscellaneous  administrative tasks;

• To provide a supportive role to the Security team (e.g. alarm testing);

• To assist the  media team in monitoring news sources, including distributing news wires to policy teams;

• To provide updated Fire Warden lists on a regular basis;

• To provide updated crisis response information and assist with any exercises

•  General Corporate Services administrative tasks as and when required 

  • Fluent in spoken English and French and able to communicate in writing to a high standard in both languages;
  • Be a self-starter; 
  • Being comfortable working as part of a small team;
  • Able to work quickly and accurately under pressure;
  • Able to maintain a calm and professional manner at all times;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • A good understanding of security and confidentiality issues;
  • Awareness of politics and current affairs in France;
  • Proven IT skills.
  • Previous switchboard experience would be a definite advantage, as would previous customer facing experience;
  • Previous office management/administrative experience.

This is a full-time (35h/Week), and permanent position. 

All appointments are subject to professional background check satisfactory security clearance. The successful applicant will be required to provide a copy of his/her passport or national identity card for all nationalities held, an up-to-date criminal record (casier judiciaire) for recent countries of residence (which can be obtained online at casier-judiciaire.justice.gouv.fr), two written proofs of address (utility invoices and/or bank statements) and two references.
