The British Embassy in Yerevan is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is currently looking for a Political Support Officer.

Working to the Head of Political and Press Section, the Political Support Officer will be an integral member of the Policy Delivery Team, providing information and logistical support to colleagues on political reporting, project work and events management. 

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Political reporting: Track internal political and foreign policy developments via media monitoring to produce regular updates and reports for senior leaders and colleagues in the Embassy, London and in the Region. Develop a network of working level contacts within Armenian government ministries, civil society organisations, political parties, and other Embassies to support this.

  • Advise HMA, Head of Political and DHM on political developments in Armenia to help inform Embassy messaging, engagement and security stance.

  • Armenia/Region: Provide clear, evidence-based insight and analysis into developments in Armenia and the Region to ensure that the Embassy’s messaging and response is well-informed. Contribute substantially to the development of policy documents such as the Country Business Plan, strategic documents, and Diptels. Develop productive working relationships with equivalent Political Officers in Baku and Tbilisi, and other Posts as required.

  • Lead on local research pieces: By analysing various source material and using sound, evidence-based judgement to help the Embassy and London have necessary insight to inform messaging and future direction.

  • Local point of contact: Responding to ad hoc information requests from London based colleagues and MFA.

  • Lead on arrangements for Chevening and other scholarship programmes: Manage the lifecycle of the Embassy’s Chevening programme (point of contact and lead for Chevening enquiries, designing and delivering outreach events, organising interviews, evaluating impact) and other scholarship programmes (e.g. John Smith Trust, British Council Alumni awards, etc) and study visits. Includes budget management of £tbc. Member of Post Project Board: use local insight to contribute to shape the Embassy’s programme strategy.

  • Visits: organising programmes for inward visitors, coordinating with local stakeholders, partners and interlocutors.

  • Outreach: advise on forward plan within meetings, assessing in-country situation and highlighting potential reputational risk.

  • Interpreter: for HMA (and DHM) as required.

  • Treaties: Serve as a point of contact  for the non-trade titles of the UK-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (once signed), and any future treaties; support the UK side’s preparations for the annual Strategic and Political Dialogue (including helping organise meetings).

  • University degree in political studies or related field.

  • Understanding of UK, Armenian, and South Caucasus political context.

  • A minimum of three years of relevant work experience, including evidence of report writing, engaging stakeholders, customers and partners at all levels.

  • Effective communication, including written and spoken fluency in English and Armenian and ability to adapt communication style to different situations.

  • Strong analytical and judgement skills.

  • Ability and willingness to work effectively and flexibly including out of office hours, and to travel within Armenia and overseas occasionally, and to contribute to special events/occasions in the Embassy calendar.

  • A self-starter that can work well both individually and in a team.

  • Excellent organisational skills.

  • Willingness and desire for continual learning and development.

  • IT skills, including use of MS Word, Excel and Outlook.

  • Fluency in written and spoken Russian.

This is full-time and permanent contract of 35 working hours per week (Monday to Friday) from 09:00 to 17:00. Flexible working is available.

The gross monthly salary is AMD 957,307 paid in 12 equal instalments.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background and security clearance.

The successful candidate must have pre-existing work authorisation for the Armenia in order to apply. The British Embassy does not sponsor work permits.
