The British Embassy in Copenhagen is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Regional Manager Nordics & Caspian (2 year fixed term) for SDI (Scottish Development International).

From a geographical perspective, the Copenhagen based Regional Manager will have responsibility for our trade & investment work across the Nordics, Caspian and Benelux region, including acting as People Manager for a team of 6 located in Stavanger, Copenhagen and Brussels.

The Regional Manager will also play an important role as Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) lead for one of our priority sectors (specific sector to be confirmed) and will be expected to provide strong input and leadership to strategic planning and operational delivery.

The Nordics, Caspian & Benelux Region generates over 50% of Scotland’s total exports to Europe and it is critically important we do everything we can to protect, and where possible grow, exports as we transition towards BREXIT. Providing strong leadership, direction and coaching to our European colleagues will be an important area of focus for the Regional Manager over the next 2 years.

The Regional Manager will also be expected to work collaboratively with our partners including the Dept for International Trade and Scottish Government. Managing this and fostering a culture of collaborative working will require focus, tact and diplomacy.

Main tasks of the Regional Manager will be:

  • Lead, manage and coach the Scottish Development International (SDI) Nordics, Caspian and Benelux team based in Stavanger, Copenhagen & Brussels to maximise the economic opportunity for Scotland from the Region.
  • Participate as a member of the SDI EMEA Regional Management Team, and lead the team’s relationships with colleagues in Scotland and elsewhere.
  • Lead on the development and implementation of an integrated sales and marketing plan for the Region which targets the Region’s top companies consistent with our sector priorities and the specific opportunities to do business with/in Scotland.
  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with key partner organisations, including the Department for International Trade (DIT) throughout the Region.
  • Lead on the operational planning process for Region across all priority sectors.
  • Manage the effective and efficient running of our offices, ensuring full compliance with local registration, and ensure legal and labour law requirements are met in conjunction with our appointed global advisers.
  • Provide excellent administrative management of our resources, ensuring that value for money is achieved at all times.

  • Minimum 10 year experience of international business
  • Highly developed resonant leadership experience
  • Significant International sales and marketing experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the confidence to establish relationships at the highest possible levels including Scottish Ministers
  • Previous experience of budget management and a strong grasp of the financial side of operations. A clear understanding of public accountability is also essential
  • Ability to ensure the operations are compliant with corporate governance, legal requirements, taxation issues and the labour law requirements in country
  • Previous experience of complex project management
  • Ability to operate throughout Nordics, Caspian & Benelux region and to other overseas locations if required
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and influencing skills, with a high level of confidence and competence in operating at a senior level
  • Ability to work well under pressure to tight deadlines in a highly challenging and demanding environment
  • Sensitivity and awareness of different cultures relevant to this role
  • Previous experience in running a trade and investment team
  • Previous experience of working in an overseas post
  • Previous experience of leading a geographically dispersed team
  • Previous experience of working in the Nordics, Caspian and Benelux Region
  • Relevant sectoral experience in one of the following sectors: energy, technology, life sciences, food & drink, finance & business services
