Main purpose of job

The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the UK government ministry that helps foster UK Exports and Inward Investment.  DIT officers at overseas posts liaise with the UK headquarters and other departments across the British Government to generate revenue to the British economy.

This role will lead the DIT Education and Training sector across Latin America, highlighting the UK’s global leadership on issues such as English Language, TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training), Bilingual Education, Publishing, Higher Education, Corporate Education and Schools.  This role will support UK companies to win business in the region, to increase the flow of investment between the region and the UK, and to work on market access and trade policy issues to improve the trading environment for the sector.

This is an ideal position for someone with leadership qualities, the ability to develop and deliver a strategy across a number of teams, locations and countries, working collaboratively to build a sense of team cohesion and delivering outcomes through others.  The job will be challenging and will require the successful candidate to take responsibility for delivering both quickly and to a high quality standard.  The ideal candidate will be an energetic, motivated self-starter with a passion for the education sector who has a positive and proactive attitude.  S/he thinks in terms of opportunities, not problems, and possesses the ability to motivate and inspire his/her team to deliver challenging targets.

What will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

  • Lead on managing an existing pipeline of commercial opportunities, researching, and validating new opportunities as and when they arise.
  • Provide expert support and advice to the education sector managers in Posts that form part of this campaign.
  • Assist education sector managers with achieving objectives related to market access & trade policy in the education sector by sharing best practices, building frameworks with strategic partners to open markets, ensuring continuity of existing arrangements, developing bilateral improvement on non-trade barriers, and improving existing trade arrangements/agreements.
  • Lead the team in Brazil and empower them to deliver, including through regular communication and feedback, completing all stages of appraisals on time and in line with Network guidance.
  • Manage forecasting and review of local and regional budget needed to deliver the campaign activities.
  • Work closely with the Education sector team based in London to help source British companies to respond to the commercial opportunities that arise.
  • Work closely with the Skills for Prosperity Programme, ensuring there is good coordination between the programme/policy activities and UK commercial priorities.
  • Lead on planning and delivering a number of high profile events, in both LATAC and the UK that will be designed to highlight the best of British innovation and quality to our customers.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure)

Direct line management: 1 Business Development Manager, 1 Business Analyst and 1 intern

Indirect management to the trade officers of the High Value Campaign team (Mexico, Panama)

Essential on arrival:  

  • At least 3 years’ of experience of working in the education market.
  • Good understanding of education, training, publishing products, commercial operations, sales, policy expertise, government to government engagement and institutional and business partnerships.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a flexible work environment and multi-task.
  • Fluent in English and Portuguese (written and spoken).

Desirable:  

  • University degree in some education related field.
  • Spanish language (written and spoken).
