Main purpose of job:

To work closely with the Estates Officer in ensuring that the offices and residential properties of the British High Commission in Maputo are actively maintained by organizing preventative maintenance to these properties whilst also reacting timely to requests from occupants and colleagues whilst ensuring that Health and Safety standards are adhered to by both High Commission staff members and contractors.  Furthermore, to assist the Estates Officer in maintaining inventories of all properties and updating property records on FCDO proprietary databases.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Actively react to maintenance requests and plan preventative works to the British High Commission offices and residential properties through the use of the internal service desk system to ensure SLAs are met.
  • Carrying out routine maintenance tasks including repairs, re-painting, basic electrical and plumbing; furniture removal; meeting room set-up; maintaining office equipment; driving duties to procure items from local suppliers as allocated by the Estates Manager whilst following the FCDO Purchase to Pay policy and ensuring value for money.
  • Supervise contractors on site and at the residential properties and ensure that they adhere to FCDO Health and Safety requirements.
  • Assist in maintaining furniture inventories and asset registers for all properties.
  • Provide support across the 1HMG Corporate Services team as and when required i.e. cover for leave, special events etc and undertake other duties as assigned and agreed by the Estates Manager.
  • There will be a need to be able to respond to emergencies which at times may take place outside working hours.

  • 2 Years experience as a Handyman/woman or in building maintenance skill
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Health and safety knowledge
  • IT knowledge including Windows 10 and MS Office 365
  • Driving license with a clean record
  • Fluent written and spoken English
  • Hold a certification in building maintenance or relevant property management qualification e.g. bachelors, diploma, higher diploma or higher certificate or equivalent
  • Experience of responding to service requests and office administration
  • Experience of working in a multicultural environment

There is ample opportunity to develop with FCDO/Civil Service courses that offer world-class training in corporate service provision.  We have a generous training budget, and we encourage staff to identify training to improve their performance and aid their career progression, in consultation with their line-manager.

Working patterns:

5 days a week Monday to Thursday 08:00 to 16:00 and Friday 08:00 to 13:00

Regular attendance at the office and visits to residential properties are required as part of this role so working away from the site is not possible.
