View Vacancy - JPN - Trade Adviser (Defence), A2 (L)
Main purpose of job:
Working in the Defence and Security Organisation team you will provide advice, research, and support to promote UK companies in the field of defence, specifically Japanese defence equipment related issues, Japanese defence industry and advice to UK defence industry. This role will require project management of campaigns, stakeholder management in both the public and private sectors, research and awareness of industry trends, direct advice to UK companies and other parts of UK Government.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:
40% - To promote the UK defence industry capabilities across the defence environment, covering Land, Maritime, Air, Electronic, and Space domains by engaging with key UK stakeholders in the Defence & Security Organisation, ADS , Defence Growth Partnership, UK Ministry of Defence, UK Armed Forces, wider Embassy areas and UK defence industry at all levels. Arranging support for visits to Japan and the UK including accompanying visits providing specialist advice on the Japanese defence and industrial environment and culture. The complex nature of defence language and the need to understand government and legal documents, means that fluency in Japanese is essential with good business knowledge English. Building an effective relationship with members of DIT UK and providing support for key major events such as: DSEI (UK and Japan); Japan Aerospace; Farnborough International Air Show; and the UK/Japan High Level Steering Panel. You will also support specialised events as required, including Defence & Security Industry Days and Private Company Visits to RN ships. You will be responsible for identifying a pipeline of opportunities for UK industry with potential for Export Wins for UK companies. You will advise on and implement ideas about how to position the UK defence industry sector as a trusted partner for Japan. An element of international travel to the UK is required, usually one-two trips per year.
30% - Engage effectively with Japanese target companies, trade bodies, and government stakeholders. You will research and identify key market sectors, associated trade bodies, and companies to work with and engage directly to promote the UK defence offer delivering targeted company engagements and inward and outward missions for companies. You will identify and build an effective relationship with key stakeholders in Japanese departments including JMOD, ATLA, JSDF, METI and NSS and develop a comprehensive understanding of Japanese government processes on all aspects of defence and security related procurement.
20% - Providing support to the wider DSO team particularly during events and exhibitions such as SEECAT Japan, Security & Policing UK, and inward missions relating to cyber, security, civil aviation and space where appropriate.
10% - Contribute to the wider work of the Embassy such as the Queen’s Birthday Party, inward senior visits as required and taking an active role in the Crisis response plan and participating in crisis exercises.
- Fluent Japanese language skills.
- Fluent or Business level English (IELTS band 7 or TOEIC 875 points or above or equivalent)
- Degree in business, cyber, international relations or politics is desirable but not essential.
- Experience of working in either a Japanese defence industry company or the Japanese MOD or an understanding of these sectors would be very useful.
- 1 month salary bonus equivalents payable in June and December
- (Note: Salary may be reduced due to tax status)
- Commuting allowance of up to JPY35,000 per month (paid on an actual cost basis)
- 24 days paid annual leave (calculated pro rata)
- Health Insurance and Employee pension (kenko hoken/kosei nenkin)
- Employment Insurance (koyou hoken)
The applicant must have work authorisation for Japan however if a foreign national, the British Embassy/Consulate General will support a visa application if required.
Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed):
Three key areas of focus will be:
(i) building up a knowledge of the key sectors which the postholder will work in. On the job training, presentations from sector specialists and potential Developing Sector Knowledge course in the UK and mentoring support.
(ii) building up influencing and sales skills through on the job training and DIT run courses like Effective Account Management or Consultancy Based Sales training courses would be useful.
(iii) developing knowledge of the UK Government system through on-the-job training, online course and interaction with other parts of the Embassy and HMG Departments.
The British Embassy offers comprehensive learning and development opportunities that will be fully available to the jobholder. We regularly run both work area specific training, as well as more general skills development in project management, finance, and leadership. Each year the job holder will be encouraged to use 5 development days to pursue job related and personal development goals.
All staff are required to take a role in the embassy’s crisis preparation and response. Full training will be provided for this and regular opportunities will be available to test and develop your skills.
