The British Embassy in Amman is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual for the position of Residence Chef, Grade – A1 (L).

 

Main purpose of the job:

The main purpose of the job is to prepare and present a wide range of appropriate high quality food to a high standard, suitable for providing excellent hospitality to the Ambassador’s guests at formal dinners and other hosted events. The jobholder is required to shop as necessary for food, maintain the kitchen and its equipment to a high state of cleanliness and ensure that excellent hygiene procedures are followed at all times.

 

Main responsibilities:

1. Food preparation

  • Prepare and present a wide range of appropriate high quality food to a high standard, suitable for providing excellent hospitality to the Ambassador’s guests, in line with direction from the Ambassador, Ambassador’s spouse and Residence Manager as required.
  • Ensure that excellent hygiene procedures are followed at all times.
  • Agree menus with the Ambassador and Residence Manager.
  • Test new items in advance of events as necessary.
  • Plan for specific food requirements of guests, taking into account allergies, religious restrictions and preferences.
  • Plan food preparation to ensure that there is adequate time for all events in the Residence diary.

2. Shopping

  • Shop for high quality food and other domestic requirements of the Residence at competitive prices, in line with direction from the Ambassador, Ambassador’s spouse and Residence Manager.
  • Select shops for high quality food at competitive prices, obtaining value for money.

3. Cleaning and maintenance

  • Ensure that the kitchen, its equipment and cooking utensils are maintained to a high level of cleanliness, ensuring that excellent hygiene procedures are followed at all times.
  • Maintain kitchen equipment and let the Residence Manager know promptly about broken or inadequate equipment so that this can be repaired or replaced as necessary.

4. Other

  • Work with external caterers, as required, so that they can use kitchen equipment and to ensure that they understand the standards expected in the Residence.
  • Provide support to Chief Steward and Residence Manager to ensure smooth running of Residence events.

  • Fluent communication skills in English (both written and oral) with minimum IELTS level 6.
  • The ability to cook a wide range of high quality food to a high standard, suitable for providing excellent hospitality to the Ambassador’s guests at formal dinners and other events at the Residence in Amman, in a way which upholds and enhances the UK’s reputation.
  • Experience of working as a chef for Arabic and International cuisines for at least three years, together with evidence of appropriate professional training.
  • Understanding of and commitment to providing the highest standards of hygiene at all times.
  • Constructive approach to feedback and a willingness to learn, adapt and undertake training as required in the role, including to expand the repertoire of menus and high quality dishes that can be provided.
  • The ability to maintain performance under pressure, and to work quickly and reliably with little supervision to meet challenging targets, maintaining high standards and attention to detail at all times.
  • Personal responsibility and accountability for work.
  • Flexible, courteous and respectful of others, with a positive attitude to working with other colleagues in a collaborative, effective, mutually supportive and motivated team, committed to upholding the Embassy’s values.

Eligibility:

If you are selected for this position, we will be able to employ you as long as:

  • Receive the appropriate level of standard security clearance;
  • All applicants must hold permission to work in Jordan at the time of making their application.  The British Embassy will not process applications from anyone not holding employment permission to work in Jordan.

Working hours and remuneration:

Conditioned working hours are 37 hours per week. Standard working hours are from 08:00 to 15:30 from Sunday to Wednesday and 08:00 to 15:00 on Thursday, though flexible hours will be required as necessary to accommodate the schedule of events at the Residence.

Pay is on the Embassy A1 (L) scale, with a salary of JOD 785 per month. Working can include evenings for which an additional shift disturbance payment of JD144 is payable. No accommodation and relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.

Please note that your salary will be paid gross and you are expected to comply with your tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the local authorities.  If exceptionally you are not liable to pay Jordanian tax, you will receive a net salary which is minus the deduction of an equivalent level of local tax.  Further information on this will be given to candidates at interview if necessary.

This position is offered on a full time, permanent basis. The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-days probationary period.
