The successful candidate will work closely with the Political Counsellor and the Head of Political as a key member of the Embassy’s Internal Political Team. S/he will help drive the team in delivering the highest standards of political analysis, provide programme oversight on political reform, and networking and engaging for the Embassy. The role would suit someone who has strong analytical skills, a good knowledge of recent Philippine history and current issues, strong grasp of the Philippine legislative system,  and who can work confidently with a range of stakeholders in government, civil society and international institutions

The jobholder will have a frontline role in supporting the Embassy’s political objectives. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with strong management skills, a proven delivery record, interest in political and human rights work, and the skills to deliver in a fast-paced and complex environment.

The jobholder will be responsible for:

Political Analysis

  • Prepare in-depth analysis on the developments in the legislature, research on bills filed in Congress and how it aligns with UK laws
  • Deliver political analysis and reporting of key national-level developments, drawing out the implications for different areas of the Embassy’s work in the Philippines. 
  • Provide briefing for the Political Counsellor and other senior Embassy staff on national-level engagements to help them navigate through meetings and events effectively to deliver key objectives on behalf of the UK.

Networking and Influencing

  • Working closely with the rest of the Political Team, assist in monitoring and crafting the Embassy’s political engagement strategy to develop mid to senior level contacts in the executive and legislative arms of government, think-tanks, NGOs, and other relevant organisations.
  • Use this network to support the Embassy as it seeks to work with relevant interlocutors to advance UK-Philippines priorities set out in the Country Business Plan.

Programme Advice

  • Contribute political advice to support the Embassy’s programmes, on human rights, political reform, and the peace process.

Line Management

  • Provide support and guidance to the Political Officer, helping them to develop their reporting and programme skills, in addition to providing an efficient support function to the Internal Team.


  • Political Officer

  • A university degree in Political Science, International Relations or any other relevant course
  • A detailed understanding of historical and contemporary political issues in the Philippines
  • A wide network of political contacts
  • Excellent research and analytical skills
  • Strong report writing and presentation skills
  • Significant drive, enthusiasm and commitment
  • Effective written and oral communications in English and Filipino
  • Ability to distil complex or technical issues into clear messages


  • Language: English & Filipino
  • Level of language required : Fluent in verbal & written English & Filipino

  • Post-graduate degree in a relevant field
  • Experience of programme management
