Main purpose of job:

The role overseas the development and delivery of marketing and social media for the UK Government Department for International Trade across Australia and New Zealand. 

You will focus on delivering marketing campaigns to support trade and investment objectives across Australia and New Zealand. You will design and implement campaigns which reach key audiences, delivering actionable leads and ensuring full evaluation and measurement of budget spend. 

You will also have overarching responsibility for the UK’s GREAT brand, working within project teams to deliver high impact creative moments that encourage target audiences to “See things differently”. 

You will manage a small team, reporting to the Head of Communications and working closely with the media and communications team. You will build strong relationships across the business able to translate business objectives into communication strategies. You will need to be adept at spotting creative opportunities to maximise owned and paid for channels to aid overall communications objectives for the UK in Australia team. 

This is an exciting time for the UK-Australia relationship. We will be launching a new campaign at Mardi Gras, tech and innovation installations at the Melbourne Grand Prix as well as building trilateral defence links through AUKUS. Alongside this you will be responsible for leading the marketing and campaign plans for the Australia and New Zealand Free Trade Agreements. 

We want to continue to build the UK’s reputation as a first class destination for inward investment, an innovation hub and Science Superpower. As a source of expertise, influence, impact and reach. You will work collaboratively with other communication teams including Visit Britain and the British Council. 

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

This is an exciting leadership opportunity for a confident, motivated and experienced marketing professional. You will have a strong marketing and communications background and be responsible for managing activity across Australia and New Zealand, supported by a small team.

Working alongside our trade and investment business development teams, the Head of Communications and our Asia Pacific hub, you will refine and implement a marketing and communication strategy which positions the UK as an ideal trade partner; generates demand for UK products and services and encourages Australian and New Zealand companies to invest in the UK. 

You will use a range of owned and paid for channels including digital, social, direct marketing, experiential print and broadcast. You will require high level project management skills as well as the ability to work well with external (and internal) stakeholders.  

You will also provide best practice support to business development teams across the network who organise and deliver events and promotion activity with marketing funding. You will ensure teams are providing clear bids for funding with strong objectives, VfM and measurement against KPIs. You will embed strong evaluation and lead capturing with the teams, demonstrating the value of marcomms activity and budget.

You will be used to working in a fast-paced environment, have strong team management and mentoring skills and know how to bring out the best in your team.  You will demonstrate a commitment to self-development and developing others, building long-term staff capability and competency in and beyond own team. You will have a strong grounding across communications with an understanding and awareness of media engagement, visits and crisis response. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver strategic communications campaigns to achieve business objectives. These insight driven campaigns across multiple channels will reach key audiences and deliver measurable results. 
  • Manage delivery and budget spend across multiple projects, keeping work on track and to budget. Report regularly to the network, highlighting delivery risks and mitigations.  
  • Set direction for and manage a small communications and marketing team including Social Media Officer and Brand and Marketing Manager. You will ensure quality and timely output. 
  • Evaluate activity to demonstrate success, learn lessons and refine future campaigns and activity. 
  • Oversee social media channel output, strategy and evaluation. 
  • Identity, escalate and manage reputational or communication risks and crisis situations. 
  • Provide guidance and recommendations to sector and investment teams to develop and run the events and promotion activity related to their sector or area. You will oversee all bids from the business teams for marketing funding, ensuring that they represent value for money, have strong KPIs and a plan for measurement. 
  • Work collaboratively as part of a wider communications team which includes Visit Britain and British Council to support the UK Government’s work in Australia and New Zealand. Ensure team engages and supports wider strategic communication campaigns, including soft power campaign. 
  • Support on communications for Ministerial and VIP visits, crisis, high profile announcements and provide feedback and support to Consul General’s to maximise their profile. 
  • Ensure integration and leverage of ‘GREAT’ Britain brand across all activity in compliance with brand guidelines and champion the GREAT campaign locally, identifying opportunities to maximise exposure. Manage GREAT projects, initiatives and activations to support UK Government objectives in Australia. 

Lead tender processes, commission work, manage contracts and negotiate with third party suppliers in line with procurement guidelines.

Marketing Budget (£TBC) 

  • At least 5 years of work experience in strategic marketing/communications;
  • Minimum bachelor degree level, preferably in marketing and/or communications;
  • Proven track record in development and delivery of strategic communication and marketing across a owned, earned and paid for channels;
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills and ability to influence senior leaders and stakeholders, as well as work collaboratively across peer networks;
  • Engaging and resilient leader, able to empower colleagues and build capability;
  • Ability to manage a number of different projects and deliver on time
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, delivering and evaluating communications activity/campaigns to deliver business objectives.
  • Experience managing corporate or government social media account(s)
  • Experience managing and tracking marketing spend and budget reporting. 
  • Ability to evaluate activity across a range of channels to demonstrate success, gain insight and understand how to improve campaigns and activity in the future. With particular focus on lead capture and generation. 
  • Understanding of the political, business and investment climate in Australia, New Zealand and the UK.
  • Experience in designing and developing content for digital channels.
  • Understanding of the Australian (and UK) media landscape with previous experience in dealing with the media on reactive or proactive issues. 
  • Line management experience
  • Ability to create rich media content for social media eg: using smart phone for photography, video and editing; creation of infographics/gifs.
  • Understanding and experience of working with the Australian media.
