The British Embassy in Spain is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now recruiting for the position of Iberia Estates Technical Manager, based in Madrid.

The Iberia Estates team is responsible for over 70 properties in Spain and Portugal. As the Iberia Technical Manager you will ensure that properties are well maintained, safe, and fit for purpose. You will be responsible for contract and supplier management. You will be responsible for purchasing furniture items and equipment, refurbishment works, expat accommodation and administrative tasks. You are also responsible for the line management of a Maintenance Supervisor. The Maintenance team is part of the Estates team and carries out preventive and corrective maintenance works.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Follow-up compliance with UK Health and Safety standards, implementing internal recommendations.
  • Manage small dedicated Maintenance Team located in Spain and Portugal, planning works requests within manageable and reasonable timescales.
  • Deputise for Estates Manager during annual leave.
  • Liaise with landlords, suppliers and clients, purchasing furniture and managing suppliers. Overall coordination of furniture inventories and update of property database.
  • Manage maintenance contracts from 11 different locations.
  • Experience in Estates and/or Property Management.
  • Experience in Health and Safety management.
  • Experience in managing contracts.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Previous experience in managing a team.
  • Strong customer oriented skills (internal and external customers).
  • Excellent oral and written English and Spanish,
  • Experience of dealing with suppliers, face to face and on the telephone.
  • Technical knowledge and experience of facilities management.
  • Experience in project management.
  • Portuguese and international commercial surveyor or facilities management work experience.
  • Technical qualification.
  • A knowledge of Portuguese language is highly desirable.
  • Basic knowledge of finance and procurement would be desirable.
  • Availability to travel occasionally (1 day).

Terms and Conditions

This is a full-time fixed-term contract of 5-6 months. The working hours are 37.5 hrs per week. Normal working hours are Monday to Friday 08:00 to 16:00 hours.

The successful candidate will be subject to a confirmation of a background check and security clearance with a probation period of 3 months and is expected to commence employment in May 2017.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy/Consulate based on gross annual salary.

The British Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of Spanish income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.
