UKDEL (UK Delegation to NATO)

The United Kingdom’s Joint Delegation to NATO is the vital link between the UK Government and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Its principal roles are to promote British interests in NATO and to keep UK Ministers and Government Departments informed about NATO discussions and is now looking for a Senior Policy Officer (Investment & Industry Adviser) for the UK Delegation to NATO in Brussels (UKDEL).

NATO is the world’s most successful military alliance, and has been at the heart of the United Kingdom’s defence for 70 years. The United Kingdom's Joint Delegation to NATO is the link between the UK Government and the NATO. The Delegation’s principal roles are to promote British interests in NATO and to keep UK Ministers and government departments informed about NATO discussions. Its work is valued highly by FCO and MOD Ministers alike.

Working within a political/military alliance of 29 nations, the post holder is responsible for deciding how to spend NATO’s €700 million per annum common funded military capital programme, and for overseeing and directing the implementation of projects within agreed scope, schedule, and budgets. The role also extends to the modernisation and enhancement of Alliance resource and programme and project management procedures in order to promote the more effective delivery of military capability. 

Main Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • To represent the UK’s interests on the NATO Investment Committee which is responsible for implementing the €700 million per annum NATO Security and Investment Programme (NSIP) - (40%);
  • To ensure that investment decisions are consistent with Ministry of Defence and wider cross-Government priorities and deliver critical capabilities in a timely fashion and represent value for money - (20%); 
  • To pursue reform of NATO’s financial and resource management procedures as part of a process of continuous improvement in order to improve the delivery of common funded military capabilities - (30%);
  • Establish and maintain contact with stakeholders in NATO and in UK Government departments, particularly the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Ministry of Defence in support of the resource management and wider Delegation objectives - (10%).

  • Good analytical skills and sound judgement to deliver results;
  • Experience of working with a wide network of contacts demonstrating lobbying and influencing skills.;
  • Strong interpersonal and customer focus skills;
  • Ability to grasp complex issues quickly and communicate them simply and effectively;
  • Ability to work in a team, covering colleagues as necessary;
  • Good organisational skills;
  • Adaptability under pressure;
  • Fluent written and spoken English;
  • Good IT skills, preferably experience of Outlook, Word and PowerPoint;
  • The job holder will occasionally be required to work extended hours during peak periods.
  • Previous experience of Resource/Programme Management experience (very desirable);
  • Previous experience/knowledge of NATO and/or UK Government institutions and procedures;
  • Good written and spoken French, is desirable but not mandatory.

This is a full-time contract for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week. This position will be filled on a "replacement contract" to cover a Maternity Leave. It is anticipated that the staff member will return in February 2020. This is only a guide and any possible earlier return or extension to this date would be discussed with the successful candidate.

The monthly gross salary for this position is €5,233.63C4(L) level.

Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source.
