Economic and Prosperity

Main purpose of job:

To deliver the UK’s prosperity agenda in Malawi, working closely with DFID in Malawi and the Department for International Trade (representative in South Africa) as well as counterparts in countries in the region.

a)     Build partnerships with Malawi’s government to promote economic reform and sustainability; and promote the UK’s economic and business reputation.

d)     Seek and develop medium- to long-term commercial opportunities for the UK in Malawi and raise awareness of the opportunities to government colleagues and UK businesses.


Roles and responsibilities:

    • Lead on economic and trade policy initiatives – identifying those that will have the greatest impact on economic development in Malawi and leveraging UK expertise to advise and support the Malawian government’s economic and trade policy.
    • Build networks of influence with key trade policy stakeholders in each region of Malawi.
    • Lead on understanding and defining brexit opportunities and risks for Malawi and British businesses operating in Malawi – supporting businesses to navigate any complexities and maximise opportunities.
    • Identify any market access barriers for UK companies, the potential impact if unblocked, the bilateral or multilateral processes for unblocking and manage their implementation.
    • Deepen our network of Malawian business contacts and our understanding of the opportunities and constraints for investing in and trading with Malawi.
    • Report on local economic and policy developments of relevance to UK interests.
    • Monitor opportunities arising from the implementation of climate policies such as promoting UK expertise on green finance and energy efficiency, working closely with the regional climate change advisor (based in Lilongwe).
    • Support wider UK prosperity and development goals through collaboration DFID and DIT, helping to identify speaking and engagement opportunities to underline UK economic and innovation excellence.
    • Identify and lead on visit programmes that can promote economic policy and innovation objectives, preparing logistics and aiding with written briefings. For all   activity ensure appropriate external media attention and promotional activity through social media, blogging etc in co-ordination with the communications manager.

    Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

    No direct line management. There will be opportunities to bid for small pots of funding but this is primarily an influencing role working alongside DFID teams who oversee the large programme spend.

    • Bachelors’ degree minimum in relevant field
    • Minimum of 4-6 years relevant work experience
    • Demonstrated interest in economic and trade policy matters
    • Strong networking skills and confidence with external clients
    • Strong oral/written communication skills with a range of stakeholder types and levels
    • Strong research and analytical skills
    • Good organisational and project management skills working to deadlines with minimal supervision
    • Positive and flexible attitude – working in a small team supporting each other as required e.g. helping out with major events
    • Good IT skills
    • Understanding of key sectors that will drive growth in Malawi including agriculture and energy

    Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed): 

    This role offers many development opportunities. As a new position in the High Commission, you will have the opportunity to mould the position, and ways to deliver, around your core strengths. There will be specific training opportunities in economics and prosperity, networking and influencing. And many opportunities on the job to develop skills. You will be expected to travel to the UK at least once a year, probably more, to engage with British businesses there and to attend conferences and training courses.

    The British High Commission Lilongwe offers a strong benefits package.  This package includes medical and pension, in addition to generous vacation and leave time, and an enriching training package.     The target salary for this position is $2,286.39 annualized working a 35 hour work week.  Salary will be confirmed upon offer of employment.
