This is an exciting and demanding role for a Deputy Country Director to be a critical part of a dynamic and high achieving regional trade team. They will be proactive and competent at building relationships with a range of high-profile external contacts. They will work closely with UK’s private sector, engaging in trade promotion activities, tackling market access barriers, facilitating trade in the infrastructure and clean growth sectors in the Dominican Market. Working directly with the Country Director of Trade and Investment for the Dominican Market and in coordination other officials from the sub-region, the Deputy Country Director will contribute to the team’s targets and the delivery of sector-related activities across Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic.

This role requires excellent judgement and problem solving as the Deputy Country Director will operate with a high level of independence, identifying and pursuing opportunities with responsibility for delivery in their priority sector(s). Excellent organisational and engagement skills are also key to enable the job holder to successfully organise and deliver events, workshops and conferences, often working to tight timeframes, navigating geographical, language and cultural differences.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • To perform as local ‘account manager’ for a key group of British investors in Dominican Republic, providing regular support in trade-related matters, adding value to their operations and developing mutually beneficial relationships.            
  • To develop and maintain a pipeline of commercial opportunities in assigned sectors, engaging with UK exporters and local stakeholder.
  • To build/expand your networks with key Dominican Government and private sector decision makers, including buyers, budget holders, policy makers, and regulators across the sectors.
  • Collaborate in the implementation of policy activities aiming to tackle market access barriers in priority sectors, including workshops and conferences. To perform as project manager of outsourced projects.
  • To support the Country Director by engaging and coordinating trade promotion activities in the DR. This includes trade missions, conferences, high-level visits and commercial programmes for companies and other stakeholders.

 


  • A minimum of two years of previous commercial or related professional experience
  • University degree, preferably in international trade, finance, economics, business or international relations
  • Experience in business development and client relationship/account management
  • Excellent level of English and Spanish (both oral and written)
  • IT proficiency and ability to work across multiple IT platforms and databases as well as Microsoft office (Word, Excel, Power Point)
  • Financial and budgeting skills
  • Politically aware and familiar with international trade matters 

        

  • An English-taught master’s degree from a recognised university is a plus.
  • Excellent networks in DR Government or private sector in relevant sectors

The Embassy is committed to learning and development and there is a range of training on offer for the successful applicant to support their work in the embassy.  This will include training courses delivered remotely through the Foreign Offices’ Diplomatic Academy, as well as the potential to travel for training courses delivered regionally and/or the UK, with the Department of International Trade

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

Working patterns:    Office hours in the embassy are 8am – 4:30pm Monday to Thursday and from 8am – 1pm on Fridays, although there is scope for flexible working arrangements, which can be agreed with the Line Manager; personal circumstances will be taken into account.

This job involves flexible working, sometimes working late nights when there are official events. Some travel abroad will be required.
